Congregates of Mount Zion General Assembly, a Christian church in Polokwane, South Africa’s Limpopo province, were left in shock last Sunday, after a woman lost her life during a failed miracle attempt by pastor Lethebo Rabalango.
Pastor Lethebo had organised a night of worship at his church where he was demonstrating his power and trying to emphasise that if Jesus could walk on water, then he could do anything with power of faith. To drive home his point, he asked a lady from the congregation to take part in this real-life miracle. He asked her to lie flat on the floor and ordered his ushers to place a heavy speaker on her belly saying the weight would not harm her. As if that wasn’t enough, he then proceeded to climb on the speaker, adding even more pressure to the woman’s body.
Now, throughout this shocking ordeal, the lady remained suspiciously quiet and immobile, but no one bothered to check if she was alright. Not until the pastor asked her to rise that everyone realised that she had suffocated and passed out. She came through after some elders in the church gave her first aid treatment, but started complaining of a broken rib. She was later taken to the hospital where it was reported that she had died of severe internal bleeding.
Even shocking was Pastor Lethebo’s reaction to her death. After being confronted about this failed miracle attempt, he blamed the girl and accused her of having little faith for she could not withstand a very simple task.
We have seen some crazy things people do in the name of religion like ordering congregates to eat grass and drink petrol to get closer to God, or coming naked to church, but Pastor Lethebo’s failed miracle attempt is definitely disturbing and one for obvious concern.
